A burette (also buret) is a laboratory equipment used in analytical chemistry for the dispensing of variable, and for measuring amount of a chemical solution. It is a long glass tube with taper end that are attached with a valve, which controls the flow of liquid from the tube to the burette tip. There're two alternative methods for the valve on a burette: the ground glass stopcock which is furnished on burettes to fill with acidic solution and the rubber tubing with a glass bead in it which is furnished on burettes to fill with alkaline solution, as putting an alkaline solution in a buret with a ground glass stopcock might cause problems, since alkalis can cause ground glass parts to "seize up" much more readily than acids can. Nowadays, most burets have teflon stopcocks, which won't cause any "seize up" issues as it's resistant to either acid or alkali.
